Breech Position Treatment

Treatment for Breech Pregnancy

What is Breech Pregnancy?

Breech pregnancy refers to a condition where the fetus is positioned with its feet or buttocks downward, rather than the usual head-down position, during pregnancy. Typically, in the later stages of pregnancy, the fetus turns head-down in preparation for delivery. In the case of breech pregnancy, complications can arise during delivery. If the breech position is not corrected, a cesarean section is often chosen for delivery.

Causes of Breech Pregnancy

There are several potential causes of breech pregnancy, including the following factors:

  • Uterine shape or abnormalities
  • Excess or insufficient amniotic fluid
  • Restrictions on fetal movement
  • Pelvic shape or structure of the mother
  • Previous experience with breech pregnancies
  • Multiple pregnancies (e.g., twins)

Methods of Treatment for Breech Pregnancy

There are several methods to treat breech pregnancy, including the following:

  • Acupuncture: Acupuncture is highly effective in treating breech pregnancies. Specifically, “breech pregnancy acupuncture” relaxes the pelvic area of the mother and creates a favorable environment for the fetus to turn. Acupuncture is a very safe treatment, causing no harm to either the mother or fetus.
  • Moxibustion: Applying moxibustion to specific acupoints can help return the fetus to the correct position. Moxibustion improves blood circulation and relaxes muscles through its warming effect.
  • Exercise and Stretching: By adjusting the mother’s posture and performing exercises and stretches, the fetus may become more likely to turn. For instance, positioning the hips higher than the head can be effective.
  • Music Therapy and Relaxation Techniques: At a time when the fetus can hear, music or relaxation methods may be used to stimulate the fetus, making it easier to adjust its position.

Precautions for Breech Pregnancy Treatment

When undergoing breech pregnancy treatment, the following precautions should be observed:

  • Timing of Treatment: The most effective time for breech pregnancy treatment is in the later stages of pregnancy, typically between 32 and 36 weeks.
  • Consultation with a Doctor: Before undergoing acupuncture treatment, it is important to consult with your doctor to ensure its safety.
  • Avoid Overexertion: Treatment should be performed without forcing it, ensuring that the mother remains relaxed during the process.

Effectiveness of Breech Pregnancy Treatment and Expected Results

By undergoing breech pregnancy treatment, the fetus may rotate, potentially enabling vaginal delivery. Acupuncture, in particular, has been reported to improve breech position in many pregnant women. As the effectiveness of treatment can vary from person to person, improvement may not be immediate. However, with continuous treatment, positive results can be expected.

Post-Treatment Follow-Up

After breech pregnancy treatment, the position of the fetus can be checked through an ultrasound. The progress will be carefully monitored, and additional treatments may be provided as necessary. Even if the breech position is corrected, ongoing care during the later stages of pregnancy is crucial to ensure smooth delivery preparations.
