KAATSU training is a method of strength training where pressure is applied to the upper arms and legs using special belts, restricting blood flow to enhance muscle training. This unique form of training quickly induces hypoxia in muscles, stimulating rarely used muscle fibers effectively. As a result, it allows for effective training with low load and in a short time, gaining attention from many people in recent years.
KAATSU training has been developed over the past 50 years through various trials and errors, and now its principles are well-established and used in clinical and sports settings around the world.
KAATSU training restricts blood flow appropriately, even with light loads, causing more lactic acid to build up than with high-intensity training. As a result, more growth hormones are secreted. These hormones circulate throughout the body, breaking down fat and building muscle, not just in the arms and legs where the blood flow is restricted. Growth hormone secretion peaks around 15 minutes after KAATSU training, allowing for substantial effects in a short amount of time. The amount of growth hormone secreted is greater than in non-KAATSU training.
When appropriate pressure is applied to the upper arms and legs, restricting blood volume, blood enters but has difficulty flowing out, leading to blood being directed into capillaries that are rarely used. As a result, oxygen reaches all parts of the body.
When the pressure is released, a large volume of blood rushes out. During this process, waste materials that had been blocking the blood vessels are quickly removed.
With rejuvenated blood vessels and improved circulation, symptoms like cold sensitivity and shoulder stiffness are alleviated, and under-eye circles may improve.
Exercising under moderate pressure during KAATSU training activates fast-twitch muscles, leading to a significant increase in lactic acid concentration in the blood. Because blood flow is restricted, the lactic acid accumulates in the muscles. When lactic acid accumulates in the blood, sensory nerves in the muscles detect it and send signals to the brain’s hypothalamus, which then stimulates the pituitary gland to release large amounts of growth hormones.
When KAATSU training is done, growth hormone secretion is about 10 times that of regular training and over 100 times that of rest. The abundant growth hormones circulate through the body, targeting fat cells and breaking down triglycerides into fatty acids and glycerol.
In other words, the more growth hormone that is secreted, the more fat is broken down, leading to fat burning and improving skin elasticity, which helps maintain a youthful body.
